Freedom Sky Resort is Northern Thailand’s latest addition to the lineup of places that allow public nudity. Actually, it’s only the second along with The Oriental Village. (Read Nudist Planet’s review of The Oriental Village). The resort itself has existed for a few years. But it hadn’t been a naturist site before. The new owner — called Army — has done a complete and impressive renovation of the facilities.
Pool & Bar Area
The communal areas of Freedom Sky center around a small, shallow rectangular pool with attached cold-water spa. It is a space that feels ideal for socializing. If you are looking to get away from it all, this may not be your scene. Although, there are more tranquil spots throughout the property.
In addition to a large suite, the pool is enclosed by a spacious open-air bar/cafe on two levels and a couple of meeting rooms — one of them also two-leveled. The upper floor of the bar provides spectacular views of the adjacent jungle-covered Doi Suthep mountains. It’s a terrific place to watch the sunset over the hills. Or to see it rise over the small suburban town of Mae Rim. Bring mosquito repellent!
Freedom Sky’s rooms are found in duplex bungalows skirting an orchid-filled garden. They each feature a private balcony/terrace facing the mountains and/or the small stream that flows at the resorts edge. Modern, bright and clean they are quite comfortable.
For me, the highlight of the resort are the lush tropical gardens. They provide both cozy corners and open lawns. Chiang Mai can be very hot, but the combination of the shaded yards and surrounding jungle helps to reduce the heat here. Filled with flowering plants and colorful butterflies, the gardens invite languid leisure.
Nearby Tourist Attractions
Mae Rim, the district where the resort is situated, is the area for most of Chiang Mai’s natural and adventure tourist attractions. The things that most come to northern Thailand for are extremely close in the jungles of Mae Rim district. These include elephant sanctuaries, orchid and botanical gardens, hiking, rafting, the monkey park, bungee jumping, and the Long Neck Villages. If you prefer markets and temple tours, the city is still easily accessible. Though Freedom Sky is probably not the ideal location to explore these activities.
